It is December. Winter is coming. It is cold. Look out of the window. It is snowing. George and Mary are very happy. They like winter sports very much. Tomorrow after school they can go sledging or skiing.
There is a lot of snow everywhere. The boys and girls are skiing and sledging. Some of them are making a snowman. They can make snowballs, too. It´s nice to ride down the hill. Everybody is happy. The dog is happy, too.

The skating rink is full of children. It is very cold but they do not mind. The boys are playing hockey. The girls are skating George and Ann are coming to join their friends. They are a little late but the afternoon is long enough.
Every year the boys and girls spend their winter holidays in the mountains. John, too, is going to the mountains with his class. He is leaving tomorrow morning. He must get his things ready in the evening. He does not know where to put them all. His rucksack will be too full. Now the grandmother is bringing some cakes. Where is he going to put them?
The train is leaving at six /o´clock/ in the morning. It is already five minutes to six. All the boys and girls are in the train. Only one of them is missing. It is John. He is late as usual. He does not like to get up in the morning. The teacher is waiting for him.
In the picture you can see a mountain hotel. It is on the top of a high hill. The children are walking quickly up the hill. They are looking forward to their stay in the mountains. Their skis and rucksacks are on a sledge. They are heavy but the horses are very strong. One of the boys is walking beside the sledge.
The first day in the mountains is lovely. The sun is shining. Let’s hope that the weather is going to be nice all the week. The children are happy. They all want to show their friends what they can do. Some of them cannot well yet. They often fall, but they do not mind. Winter sports are great fun.
The training starts. The boys and girls are learning to ski. It is not easy at first. Every beginning is difficult. They must learn to go up and down the hill. It is easier to go down than up. But if you do not know how to stop you are sure to fall. The trainer is showing the children how to stop.
After a few days the boys and girls can make a long trip. It is interesting to see other places, too. The weather is lovely. You have a clear view of all the mountains around you. It is a good thing to have a map. You know where you are. You cannot loose your way.
In the evenings it is pleasant lo sit and rest in the warm club-room. The evenings are long in winter but the children always know what to do. They can sing or play games. They can play chess or listen to the radio. They can look at (watch) TV (= television). They must not forget to write to their parents or friends.
Children learn very quickly. New the boys and girls can ski quite well, some of them are really very good skiers. They are not afraid of going quickly down the hill. Today they are running a race. Look at number 14. How quickly he is running. It is George. The teacher says he is the best of all.
Winter holidays are over. The children are going back home. They are not very happy. But other children are coming. They, too, are looking forward to their stay in the mountains. George and Ann are sitting in the train. They are talking about their winter holidays. It was a jolly week. They all had a very good time indeed.
